Applying Ergonomics in the Workplace with the Alexander Technique

AT 6As early as the 18th century, doctors noticed that workers whose jobs required them to maintain certain body positions for long periods of time developed musculoskeletal problems. At the beginning of the 20th century, F. Matthias Alexander developed what is now called the Alexander Technique in Brooklyn that can help with many musculoskeletal problems. In the last 20 years, research has clearly established the connection between certain job tasks and repetitive stress injuries or RSIs.

The two elements involved here are called static work and force. Static work refers to it the musculoskeletal effort required to hold a certain position. Force refers to the amount of tension our muscles generate. This increase of force is due to the increase in muscular tension necessary to support your head in a tilted position.

Ergonomics is the study of human capabilities in relationship to work demands. Ergonomists have attempted to define postures that minimize unnecessary static work and reduce the forces acting on the body. All of us could significantly reduce our risk of injury if we could adhere to the ergonomic principles.

  1. All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures.
  2. Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available.
  3. Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk and upper limbs.

But, for this to occur one would have to know how their joints and muscles function and be able to change their posture to a healthier one at will. No one develops this sort of highly refined sensory awareness without special training.

One training program that cultivates these skills is the Alexander Technique of New York, which enables its students to put ergonomic principles into practice, and thus helps them reduce their risk of developing an RSI.

The Alexander Technique is not new. It was developed in the early 20th century before ergonomics became a recognized science. It has been applied throughout this century by people from all walks of life. The Technique is an educational method which shows people how they are misusing their bodies and how their everyday habits of work can be harmful. It also teaches people how to avoid work habits which create excessive amounts of static work and how to reduce the amount of unnecessary muscular force they are applying to their bodies.

Though stuttering generally requires professional help, there are many supplemental things parents can do at home to help their child overcome this relatively common problem. Here are some simple techniques suggested by the experts that may be used in connection with stuttering therapy.

Let your child know they are not alone. That famous people like James Earl Jones, Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Marilyn Monroe also have a problem with .

Talk like Mister Rogers. That means slow down and speak clearly. Although many parents find this television personality’s delivery annoying, his rate of speech does closely match a child’s speech-processing abilities. Remember, your child will try to mimic how you speak. By slowing down, you are modeling a way of speaking that your child is can realistically be able to achieve.

Take the pause this encourages. Do not be too hasty in responding to a child’s comment or question. This will encourage the calm, the slow pace of conversation and make it easier for the child to keep up his end of the conversation.

Set aside a special time to chat. Life is busy for everyone these days and parents cannot always drop everything and engage in slow, measured conversation. But it will help if a child knows that he has a certain time each day when you are going to listen to him. Even if you can only set aside 5-10 minutes, this will make life seem less busy and rushed.

Let the child talk. When you set aside some time to be with your child, let the child direct the conversation. Children who are going through a tough period may have a lot of feelings and thoughts that have gone unexpressed. It can really be magical if you create an environment where the child feels free to talk about feelings and where all feelings are considered okay and normal.

Use the saltshaker trick. A child who stutters may get shut out of fast-paced dinner conversations. One way to make things easier is to give dinner-table talk a special structure. Use a saltshaker that is passed around the table. If you had the saltshaker, it is your turn to talk and no one can interrupt you. This kind of structure is good for the stutterer because he does not feel he always has to struggle to get a word in.

Avoid talking over the child’s utterance. Though you sometimes may be tempted to finish your child’s long, labored sentences, complete his thoughts or interrupt him in a rush to get the conversation moving, let him finish. Otherwise you could possibly make his worse.

Do not be so picky. Kids who stutter need to know that they do not have to be perfect, that they can make mistakes and still be okay. Many of these children worry more about how they talk than what they say.

  5. How does the candidate react when given a task he/she is not sure how to do?
  6. Depending on what type of staff position you are interviewing for, ask about applicant’s experience with computer programs, accounting/accounts payable, medical diagnostics, medical procedures or operation of medical diagnostic equipment.
  7. Always ask if you can contact the applicant’s previous employers.
  8. Ask the applicant if they have any questions? This question may give you an idea of how interested the person is in the position.

What happens now?

When you have finished the interview, you should have a good idea of the candidate’s personality, work experience and ethic, and appropriateness of including him/her in your staff. When the applicant believes they should have a clear idea of what the job requirements are. Be sure to write down your impressions of the candidate, answers that stuck in your mind and any questions either during or immediately after interview that you may think of that you did not ask.

Always follow up with the candidate’s references and former employers. You might also perform a background check. The goal of checking into the candidate’s past is to confirm or test his/her professionalism, work ethic and inter-office dynamics.

Being methodical and logical in your hiring process for new staff to ensure that your practice runs smoothly. It will result in a better caliber of candidates and an increased likelihood for a good match in personnel.

Low Jeans 1Jeans, they are still the fashion, are they not? It is absolutely amazing, when you stop to think how long they have been around.

A style icon over 50 years and they are still in fashion. And it is not just me that believes that. Stop and take a look around when you are out shopping some time and count how many people are wearing jeans. Not just men, but women as well.

And every nation has a different style name for their jeans. For example: Yanuks is a term the British use for one brand out of LA. These jeans are chino-style with straight cut side pockets, flaps on the rear pockets, a stud-front fastening and signature Y-front belt loops.

Here in America we have quite a variety of names for the various “fashions”. Let’s see we have vintage jeans, low rise jeans, straight legged jeans, bell bottom jeans, torn jeans, low rise denim, stretch jeans, rockstar jeans, work jeans, faded jeans and the list goes on and on.

I do not know why, but I love my jeans. They make me feel good in a way no other clothing can. Putting them on makes me feel a little bit more down to earth. Perhaps it is something to do with holding on to my youth. I really could not tell you. But I remember that first pair of jeans my mother bought me. I had to wait until she washed them before I could wear them. Then she practically had to rip them off of me so she could wash them because I had been wearing them all week long.

I do not think I am the only one that feels that way. Because jeans have been associated with youth since the 1950s. But whatever it is, the whole jean fetish has moved into the age of the Cult Jean. We are not talking about your 1980s designer jeans with some kind of unique selling point, all of which are supposed to be the most flattering jeans ever, guaranteed to make the wearer look sexier, thinner, taller, younger, more feminine or masculine (which ever the case may be), etc.

The more obscure the jeans are, the cooler they are. They also have a tendency to sell out, a trend which always fuels a fashion fetish.

I think it started back in the mid-90s when the “Earl Jean” company added a little Lycra to the weave of their jeans. This new type of jeans had a different tightness around the thigh and may the blue color rich looking. These are the jeans people started cutting the cuffs off of the bottom because they would fray nicely. I guess you could say that this is when the “torn jeans” era started. But we all know it torn jeans have been around a long time.

Jeans are no longer just for casual wear, jeans like these are the staple of the modern man and woman’s wardrobe. For women they are something to wear to a party with a sparkly top and killer heels, not for doing the gardening. For men, well, they were the meantime they want and look good doing it.
