Do You Know How Long Can You Survive Without Food?

PP 9It is extremely important that you have a good stock of that you can rely upon. It can become a real problem in various survival situations to live without enough food. Because we live in a society were grocery stores and restaurants readily available we usually do not think of where our next meal is going to. Yet, when that food supply disappears, becomes unavailable because of a disaster or is not geographically within our grasp because we are lost or injured we start wondering where our next meal will come from and realize how it is to get. It then becomes a priority in our lives. So, in reality, it would be a good idea to keep a supply of survival food around.Having emergency preparedness supplies that you can require rely upon to see you through a disaster or emergency is very important. It becomes a real problem during many survival situations to live with food. Although not as critical as going without water, missing even just a few meals can cause many undesirable problems for a survivor. Although we will not starve while going without food for several days or even a week, being underfed for even just one day can cause:

  • Irritability
  • Low moral
  • Lethargy
  • Physical Weakness
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Poor judgment
  • Weakened immune system
  • Inability to maintain body temperature which can lead to hypothermia, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke.

As weakness, sickness, accidents and mistakes arise, your ability to survive lowers. With a full stomach you can take on the challenges of survival to come your way.

There is no specific amount of time it has been determined as to how long a human being can survive without food before unmistakable signs of starvation set in. Survival without food depends on several different factors.

Initial state of health. If you are healthy will have a good advantage. Your body will be able to draw from this supply of nutrients and extend the length of time you can live without food.

Amount of muscle on the body. When your body needs nutrients it will break down muscle for both fuel and nutrients. On the other hand, even at rest lean muscle burns calories.

Amount of body fat. Each pound of body fat contains about 3600 calories, enough energy for the average person to survive for about a day and half. So, gaining weight when food is plentiful is an important survival mechanism.

Your metabolism is also a factor in determining if you can live without food. Individual metabolisms vary. As you go without food your metabolism will naturally slow, but those people who are already starting from a lower baseline will have an advantage in using less calories and therefore living longer.

The amount of activity while going without food is also a factor. Being active requires increased amounts of calories and nutrients. If you are forced to live without food, the less active you can be the longer you will last.

Temperature can have a direct bearing on how long you can survive without food. The lower the temperature, your body will need to use more calories in an attempt to stay warm. The higher the temperature is just to same it will need to use more calories to stay cooler and it would be loosing those precious electrolytes in your sweat. In higher temperatures, you are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke because you were stressed out over food. So you will need to stay at up dehydrated just to live without food or longer length of time.
