In 1851, a secret society for women was started at Wesleyan Female College and that was the first Greek sorority. They called it the Adelphean Society. Greek sorority clothing did not become fashionable until much later. Officially, in 1872, Kappa Alpha Theta was the first sorority founded for women even though the Gamma phi Beta was named a sorority in 1882. The Adelphean Society was originally called Alpha Delta Phi and changed to Alpha Delta Pi in 1913.
The sorority was actually considered a fraternity at first. However, the word fraternity did not seem to fit an all female organization. Therefore, a Greek adviser came up with the word sorority instead. Whether it is called a fraternity or sorority, nowadays they have their own Greek clothing.
In college, it is easy to tell who is a sorority sister by the Greek t shirt she is wearing. It will usually displays the sorority emblem on the front or back of the shirt.
The daughters of previous sorority members that rush the same house are considered legacies and will be admitted regardless despite having to go through the humility of rush. Today, rush is kind of like a game of truth or dare. A pledge has to do a variety of things in order to be accepted into the sorority as well as practically be a slave to the older sisters. But, once they are members, they are fully fledged sisters and part of the sorority. Now they can wear their Greek T-shirts that are so popular. You can even find sorority and fraternity clothing that is specifically made for them.
The popularity of sororities and fraternities on today’s college campuses is because they give new students a place to belong. Brothers and sisters support each other as they hold functions, give parties and involve themselves in volunteer and charitable activities. This makes wearing one of their Greek tees an honor.
