Maybe you are looking for a quick costume, you are headed to a costume party, or attending a cultural festival, you might be thinking about dressing like an Indian or, to be politically correct, Native American. Which ever you are looking for, a quick outfit or perhaps something a bit more authentic, there are several avenues to take if you want to dress like an Indian. If you really want to dress up like an Indian or a Native American, here is what you do:

Get on the Internet or check the phone book for local costume shops and costume rental stores. There are lots of costume shops, but unless it is the Halloween season, you might find it difficult to find a place that sells costumes. But, do not worry, there are some rental shops that sell Halloween costumes that are open year-round. The online costume retailers are usually available anytime of the year. And if it is not the Halloween season, the costumes just might be a little bit cheaper.

You might check out a leather shop, locally and online. Leather stores that specialize in Native American wear offer things like buckskin pants or dresses, war shirts and moccasins, as well as certain special occasion items.

Check eBay or other auction sites for Native American or Indian attire and accessories. Here you can also find contemporary clothing with Native American patterns and accents.

Decide on a style. This can be either buckskin with traditional fringe, leather leggings, or the revealing breechcloth (like Tarzan). Or if you are looking for the Indian maiden, a buckskin or animal hide dress.

For an Indian brave, match the bottoms with a decorated war shirt. Depending on the weather, you might be able to omit the shirt and opt for decorative beads or Indian breastplate. Fringed buckskin shirts are also popular and will go well with buckskin trousers.

Do not forget the moccasins or mukluks. Both Indian braves and maidens wore them. Also, do not forget to wear necklaces and bracelets made of turquoise and silver or the silver buckles.

Now for your hair, part it in the middle and make two braids or you could buy a wig that is braided. For a brave, top this off with a delicate feathered headdress.
